[Shop Name] Tonkatsu Yamaga Ueno-Okachimachi Branch
[Nearest Station] Ueno-Okachimachi Station - 3 minutes on foot, Ueno Station - 10 minutes on foot
[Dinner Budget] 800 yen - 1400 yen
Visited in December 2022
[About the Shop]
After work, I was looking for a place to eat around Ueno Station. As I walked towards Ueno-Okachimachi from Ueno Station, I noticed a signboard that said "Rosukatsu set meal 800 yen." Despite being an old-fashioned tonkatsu restaurant, the prices were surprisingly reasonable. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try. I entered through the curtain and found myself in a cozy space with about 12 counter seats. The staff behind the counter exuded a sense of cleanliness. The place was quite busy, but I was told I could wait inside. The customers were mostly solo male diners, but there were also couples and families dining.
[About the Food]
★Rosukatsu Set Meal 800 yen
There were several set meal options listed on the wall. I opted for the Rosukatsu set meal priced at 800 yen. The other set meals were around 1300 yen, all reasonably priced. Although I was interested in other menu items, I decided to go with the Rosukatsu set meal. The dish arrived in about 10 minutes. It consisted of a thick pork cutlet, cabbage, rice, miso soup, and pickles. The pork cutlet was thick and perfectly fried. The sauce on the table was slightly sweet. The miso soup had a gentle flavor of clams, and the pickles had a refreshing yuzu aroma. The meal was satisfying, with great value for money. The tonkatsu was delicious, and overall, it was a fantastic dining experience. I heard there is another Yamaga branch near this Ueno-Okachimachi branch, so I look forward to visiting the Ueno branch next time. Thank you for the meal.

This time, I used it for lunch. I was undecided on what to order, but this time I ordered the hirekatsu set meal. The restaurant was full and I had to wait. Order details: Hirekatsu set meal for 1,050 yen *Includes hirekatsu, rice, miso soup, and pickles. The hirekatsu consisted of two large pieces of hirekatsu served with shredded cabbage and mustard. It was flavorful and tender with a good amount of volume. The restaurant has a small, clean atmosphere. The staff's customer service was polite. It is a tonkatsu restaurant near Ueno station.

Tonkatsu is also a fiercely competitive area in Ueno. Today, I visited the affordable Yamaya-san. About 80% of the customers were foreigners, ordering from the foreign language menu. This was my first time at this restaurant, as I usually use Ababu for takeout, but I came here after giving up on a ramen shop with a long line. I ordered the pork cutlet set meal for 1050 yen. Since there was a lot of rice, I added wasabi seaweed for 100 yen. The freshly cooked rice was very delicious. I was intrigued by the rare-like texture. Next time, I will order the mixed set (skewers, shrimp fry, horse mackerel fry).

Just finished patrolling around Tokyo at lunchtime! Ended up going around the whole city without realizing it. Now in Ueno, thinking about what to eat. The popular places all have long lines though. I decided to wait in line for about 30 minutes for a cheap yet satisfying meal - a pork cutlet with fried shrimp on top. It may not have been the best quality pork, but for the price, it was worth it. Overall, I left with a full stomach and satisfied.

Deep-fried breaded pork cutlet set meal for 1050 yen. I had the pork cutlet at the Ueno branch last time, but it was dry. So, this time I'm thinking of trying the pork fillet cutlet. It's 200 yen more expensive than the pork cutlet from last time, but it's moist and tender without that dry feeling at all. The cabbage is also fresh and crisp. Is the pork fillet cutlet the better choice, or is the taste inconsistent depending on the branch?

If you feel like eating tonkatsu at Ueno-okachimachi Station, this is the place to go. You can enjoy a loin cutlet set meal with miso soup with clams, pickled radish, and domestic rice for 850 yen, or a fillet cutlet for 1050 yen. The historic interior is bright and clean, with counter seats where you often see solo female diners. The presence of veteran staff, rather than young part-time workers, may also contribute to a sense of security for solo diners.

I have been a regular customer once a month, and I did not feel that the service was poor as mentioned in other reviews. While the cost and taste used to be good, I understand the price increase given the current situation. The wasabi seaweed dish was still excellent as always.

After a little over half a year, I visited Tonkatsu Yamagoya in Okachimachi again. The world is in the midst of a price hike rush, and indeed, the main menu items here have increased by 50 yen. The prices are now as follows: - Rosu Katsu Set Meal: 800 yen ➡ 850 yen - Hire Katsu Set Meal: 1,000 yen ➡ 1,050 yen - Mix Set Meal (Kushikatsu, Ebi Fry, Aji Fry): 900 yen ➡ 950 yen This time, I chose the Hire Katsu Set Meal for 1,050 yen. It was indeed delicious at this price. The outside had a crispy texture while the inside was tender and tasty. Thank you for the meal.

I arrived at around 12:30 on a regular day. The restaurant was full, but luckily there was no waiting list and I was able to sit down right away as one person was leaving. Soon after, another person sat down after me, followed by six foreigners speaking Chinese, so I consider myself lucky. I ordered the pork cutlet set meal. Following a recommendation I read somewhere, I started eating from the right side (fatty side). The fatty part was sweet and delicious. The pork itself was of good quality. The batter was not too thick like some chain restaurants, just right. I now want to try the premium pork cutlet set meal next time. I was full and satisfied. Thank you for the meal. However, I was seated in front of the hot pot, so it was hot and the air conditioning didn't reach me, making me sweat a lot. It might be better to visit this restaurant during cooler weather.

In late August on a weekday around 5 pm, I was looking for a place to eat in Okachimachi. I missed lunch, so even though it was 5 pm, I was in the mood for lunch. By chance, I passed by Tonkatsu Yamaya Okachimachi store, where the lights were on and customers were entering the shop for the evening service. I decided to join the line and ended up being the 5th person in line. The owner came out and asked us to place our orders from the back. I hadn't decided what to order yet, but seeing the others order higher-priced options, I ended up ordering the Large Pork Cutlet Set (1050 yen) following the trend. After a short wait, the Pork Cutlet Set (Large) arrived, with crispy coating and tender pork. It was delicious, especially with the sauce and mustard provided. The miso soup was made with clams, and the rice portion was just right for the large set. Overall, it was a tasty and cost-effective meal. I was lucky to enjoy it without having to wait in line. Thank you for the meal.

Last time, I gave up on entering because there was a long line in front of the store, so I decided to try again. When I arrived after 11 am, the restaurant was almost full, but I was able to find a seat just in time. The handmade tonkatsu had a crispy coating and juicy, tender pork. It came with miso soup with clams. It was so delicious that I couldn't help but smile.

I visited the restaurant around 1 pm on a regular day. Luckily, there was no line, but there were about 10 people waiting inside. It's still as popular as ever. After a short wait, I sat at the counter. I ordered the pork cutlet set for 850 yen. When the dish arrived, I noticed that the meat seemed thicker than before. I wondered if they increased the portion size due to a slight price increase. The meat was tender and the breading was crispy. I could see why there's always a line. After finishing my meal, I paid and left the restaurant. The quality of the food at this price point is unbelievable.

When I arrived at the usual opening time (11:00), there was no line outside and only 2 people waiting inside. The last time I visited, the pork cutlet set meal was 750 yen, but it has gone up to 850 yen now. Still cheap though. About halfway through serving the 18 counter seats, they took my order from inside the counter. Today, I ordered the large pork cutlet set meal for 1,050 yen. After about 20 minutes, I was seated. I picked up the pickles and barley tea prepared on the counter. Another 10 minutes later, the pork cutlet was served. The large size is about 1.5 times the regular, so it's around 30% more. It's tender like pork loin. It's not very thick, but it's enough. If you choose the upper loin, it will be a bit thicker. By the time I finished eating, it was almost noon, and there were 10 people waiting inside and 5 people waiting outside. Thank you for the meal.

I visited for the first time in 4 years. There were about 8 people waiting in front of the store, but I didn't have to wait long to enter. The tonkatsu set meal is 850 yen, and the tonkatsu is thick and large. They don't offer seconds, but they serve a generous portion of rice. The taste is orthodox and delicious. I was also happy with the miso soup with clams. I would like to visit again.

I ordered the hirakatsu set meal for 1050 yen. It was delicious, filling, and cheap, with amazing value for money. The thick cutlet was moist and tender, and the rice was firm and tasty. The tonkatsu was so delicious that I couldn't stop eating the rice. I enjoyed a break with miso soup with clams and pickles, and then continued eating eagerly. It was really delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Tonkatsu Yamaya in Ueno area boasts one of the best cost performances. As soon as you sit down, pickles and cold barley tea are served. The kitchen must be scorching hot, as the person frying has cuts in their mask...and they wait patiently after putting the meat in the oil. They lift it at the right timing and let it rest on the grill. Both are decided with the professional's sense of touch (of course, without a timer).
- Rosukatsu set meal (large)
Served in 10 minutes. Plenty of shredded cabbage. Soft and tender! It's just so tender, not sloppy at all. The meat is easy to chew, but bursting with flavor. And all this for this price...! I want to try the mixed fry as well...Is the owner here? In a conversation between the person frying and a customer, they mentioned that a rosukatsu elsewhere costs 3000 yen, right? Only here, at this price. Understandable.
- Rice, miso soup, plenty of soft rice, clam broth. The reassuring and relaxed atmosphere of the staff. The customers all seem to be regulars, as they order before sitting down. They eat quietly and leave quickly, creating a nice atmosphere. The restaurant was 50-80% full throughout. After finishing the meal, place the dishes on the counter. No wet towels or tissues. The only seasoning on the table is tonkatsu sauce. Thank you for the meal. August, Monday, 6:00-6:25 PM.

"Tonkatsu Hyakumeiten Yamaie" has been selected four times on the food review site "Tabelog." The Ueno branch has also been selected four times, making Yamaie a major tonkatsu brand. Even at 2:30 pm on a holiday, there was a wait for seats. In a time where tonkatsu dishes over 1,000 yen are common, the "Rosu Katsu Teishoku (850 yen tax included)" is surprisingly affordable. The quality is top-notch as expected from a Hyakumeiten! The beautiful coating, tender meat, and crispy frying are all excellent. The slightly warm interior and the smell of oil sticking to your clothes are part of the experience, but the cost performance is truly amazing!

Tonkatsu's famous restaurant! After going to the hospital in Ueno, I was wondering where to have lunch on the way back, but I decided to go to this place that I had always wanted to visit. It was 14:00 on a weekday, so I thought it might be empty, but to my surprise, it was packed! There were 8 people waiting in line... But since I had come this far, I decided to wait! And it was worth the wait! The Rosukatsu set for 850 yen! The taste of this cheapest tonkatsu was amazing! The thickness, size, tenderness, everything was delicious! Everyone, it's worth waiting in line to eat here (the downside is that it's very hot inside the restaurant).

Today's lunch was at Tonkatsu Yamabe in Okachimachi, where I had the Large Pork Cutlet Set and a beer. I was aiming for a fulfilling tonkatsu experience at Tonkatsu Manpuku, but they were closed on Wednesdays. So, I headed to Tonkatsu Yamabe as my second choice. I had to wait for about 20 minutes as the 11th person in line before finally getting a seat. I opted for the Large Pork Cutlet Set for 1,050 yen instead of the regular one for 850 yen, and of course, I added a beer considering the 37°C temperature. I couldn't resist taking a sip of the beer before digging into the generously thick Large Pork Cutlet served on my plate. It looked so beautiful that it almost made me feel like I was in heaven. With only sauce provided at the counter, I requested some salt to enjoy the cutlet both with salt and sauce. The moment I took a bite with salt, the delicious flavor of the pork spread in my mouth. The quality of this cutlet at this price is unbelievable. I hesitated to pour sauce over it because I wanted to savor every bite with just salt, but eventually, I tried it with sauce and mustard for a different taste. I was so impressed that I even considered moving to Okachimachi just to have this Large Pork Cutlet for 1,050 yen. The set also came with miso soup with clams and tasty pickled radish, making me feel incredibly happy. It's no wonder that this place gets crowded. Even though I was originally thinking of trying Tonkatsu Manpuku next time, I might just come back to Tonkatsu Yamabe again. Large Pork Cutlet Set 1,050 yen, Beer 600 yen, Total 1,650 yen.

This is my first visit. The menu and atmosphere are similar to Ichiyoshi in Takadanobaba and Yamasaki in Akebonobashi! Maybe the chef trained here before!? So, I decided to order the mixed fry instead of tonkatsu since I can imagine how the tonkatsu tastes. The horse mackerel is crispy and delicious. The shrimp is average. The skewered pork cutlet is also good. It's not mind-blowingly delicious, but the quality at this price is good. It's a tasty casual tonkatsu restaurant. The end.

Near Ueno in Tokyo, there is a tonkatsu specialty restaurant called "Yamaya" with two locations. The highlight is the Rosu Katsu set meal for 850 yen, featuring thick and tender pork loin. The portion of rice is generous. The Hirakatsu is also good at 1050 yen. It's counter seating only, so turnover is relatively quick. By noon, there is usually a wait of over 10 people.
