【2015年4月】"Tonkatsu Tonkou" is a tonkatsu restaurant founded in 1990. This year marks its 25th anniversary as a beloved tonkatsu establishment in the town. Run by a veteran couple, the husband is a former sumo wrestler from Izushi, who belonged to the Dewanoumi stable. Despite being a tonkatsu place, they also offer reservations-only "Dewanoumi Stable" chanko nabe, reflecting his sumo background. It's a place known for its jumbo-sized tonkatsu. I visited for lunch on a weekday with my usual companion. The restaurant is located in the Nishino area of Sapporo's Nishi Ward, along Miyanosawa Street near Kita 1-jo. For exact location details, please check on Tabelog. We visited around 2 p.m. on a weekday and parked our car in the restaurant's parking space.
The interior of the restaurant exudes a sense of history but is well maintained. There are six four-person tables in the raised seating area and three four-person tables on the floor. Perhaps due to the time of day, there were no previous or subsequent customers. We took a table and ordered from the menu, which notably lacks a lunch menu. I chose the "Special Premium Loin Set" while my companion opted for the "Special Premium Fillet Set." After a 22-minute wait, our two tonkatsu sets arrived.
■ Special Premium Loin Set
Special Premium Loin
Jumbo-sized tonkatsu made from Hokkaido pork
The meat has a hand-cut feel and is thick, about 1.5 centimeters even after frying. Despite being loin, the meat is tender. They use homemade breadcrumbs for the coating, resulting in a crispy texture. Perhaps due to the thickness of the meat, the coating is slightly firm. The tonkatsu sauce is also homemade, with a medium thickness between Worcestershire and medium-thick sauce, blended with spices and wine. Accompanied by thick-cut lemon, shredded cabbage, apple, parsley, and lettuce. The side dish is chilled tofu with chopped green onions and bonito flakes, offering a refreshing taste. The pickled turnip and miso soup are both traditional flavors. The miso soup is served hot with ingredients like tofu and green onions. Price: ¥1,470 (including 8% consumption tax)
■ Special Premium Fillet Set
Special Premium Fillet
Three jumbo fillet tonkatsu
Made from Hokkaido pork
The meat is thick, about 1.5 centimeters even after frying. It's a large and thick fillet, not so tender that it falls apart easily. The side dishes are pickles and miso soup. Price: same as above, ¥1,680 (including 8% consumption tax)
Both sets feature jumbo-sized tonkatsu made from Hokkaido pork. The meat quality is excellent. Due to the thickness of the meat, frying takes some time. With its generous portion and quality, the Special Premium offers good value for money. While it may lack finesse, it's a hearty tonkatsu experience. I look forward to trying the Special Premium tonkatsu set again next time. It was delicious, thank you for the meal.
