"Kebab Don - Spicy (650 yen) Oimachi Station Front: I was intrigued as a Kebab Don enthusiast (self-proclaimed term) when a new kebab shop opened in the place that used to be "Asian Kebab." The sign outside the shop reads "OTTO KEBAB." I did some research and found out there's also a shop with the same name in Akihabara. I visited during a weekday lunchtime. There were no other customers, and the staff seemed quite relaxed and chill.
As usual, I ordered the Kebab Don. You can't choose between chicken or beef here; instead, you can choose between regular and spicy sauce. I went for the spicy one. Unlike some kebab places where they carve the rotating kebab meat, here they took the meat out of a warming jar and put it in a container. By the way, I've noticed that Turkish people at kebab shops are usually very cheerful (stereotype?), but this shop didn't have that vibe.
Now, let's get back home and enjoy the meal. Most kebab places offer Kebab Don for takeout with rice at the bottom, and then they top it with cabbage and kebab meat. However, here it's separated like a curry rice, left and right. This might be good for those who don't want their rice to get messy. The portion is on the smaller side. On top of the kebab meat, there's plenty of red and white sauce.
First, let's try the kebab meat. It's chicken. Some places serve dry and tough meat, but this chicken is tender and juicy. It has the authentic chicken flavor without relying too much on seasoning. The quantity is decent. There's cabbage underneath, but it's missing tomatoes and pickles, which is a slight downside. The sauce is a blend of yogurt-like sauce and hot sauce. The hot sauce has a mild spice, a bit sweet and salty, somewhat resembling ketchup, but not as tangy. It's slightly thick in texture, but it's likely to appeal to most people.
The rice portion is smaller than what you'd get at other kebab places for takeout, more like a regular rice bowl serving, maybe equivalent to a regular bowl of rice. It seemed a bit moist, like it was freshly cooked, but it had a bit too much moisture. As mentioned earlier, the rice and meat are separated, allowing you to enjoy them alternately, which is not a bad thing for Japanese tastes.
So, I quickly finished the meal. Overall, the taste is good. However, in terms of quantity, it falls behind other places. Also, the price might feel slightly high considering the portion and that it's chicken only. It's a kebab shop following another kebab shop; let's hope it stays this time."
